SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed willingness on Friday to acquire a leading telecommunications company as part of his broader ambitions to compete with major internet service providers like Verizon and T-Mobile. Speaking at the annual Barron's investment conference, Musk stated that SpaceX could go very far in its race against telecom giants by leveraging acquired spectrum licenses, which grant the right to use specific radio frequencies.

At a certain point, we could utilize frequencies even better than a traditional telecom firm, simply acquiring the company and using its spectrum ten times more efficiently, Musk concluded. SpaceX has been aggressively expanding its capabilities to offer wireless communication services combining terrestrial cellular and satellite networks to provide seamless connectivity for mobile phones and internet users. According to the company, the initial wireless communication service is scheduled to launch in early 2028.

Using its Starlink constellation, the company currently offers satellite-based internet along with limited cellular communication services as an add-on to packages from established carriers such as T-Mobile. In recent weeks, reports indicated that SpaceX has been holding talks to acquire access to cellular towers operated by companies like Crown Castle and to purchase additional spectrum. On Wednesday, the company announced it is working alongside Qualcomm to operate the necessary ground infrastructure for its wireless networks.

BNP Paribas analyst Sam McHugh noted that the mounting pressure exerted by SpaceX on major telecom firms indicates a clear strategy, as acquiring a major telecom player carries significant advantages, including infrastructure access and deep industry and regulatory ties. Analysts suggest such an acquisition would grant SpaceX the ability to deploy a full Starlink cellular network years ahead of schedule, with TD Cowen analyst Gregory Williams estimating that T-Mobile is the clear choice.
