After years of struggling with fertility treatments and pregnancy losses, Casey finally experienced a normal pregnancy. But after 36 hours of labor, she felt that something had gone completely wrong. "I told my doctor that I think I'm going to die," she said in an interview. Seconds later, the fetus's heart rate dropped, and she was rushed for an emergency C-section under general anesthesia.

The moving story of Casey Gold (35) and her husband Ben Rosenberger, revealed this week in an exclusive interview with "People" magazine, proves that even in the darkest moments, love conquers all.

Although the baby, Archer, was saved, Casey suffered from heavy bleeding and then cardiac arrest. She was diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening heart complication related to childbirth (peripartum cardiomyopathy), was connected to life support machines, and was placed in a medically induced coma. Her last memory was her screaming at the medical staff: "Save my son!".

While Casey lay unconscious in the intensive care unit, her husband Ben was left alone with the newborn and made a heartbreaking yet hopeful decision: Ben demanded from the medical staff and the family that no one hold the new baby until Casey could do so herself. He cared for Archer alone, and even made sure to place the baby on his wife's chest while she was sedated to maintain "skin-to-skin" contact, even while she was connected to machines.

On the second day, after her heart had recovered slightly, the doctors began to wake her up. Casey opened her eyes, convinced that the worst had happened and the baby had not survived. But within seconds, Ben approached her and placed the living and healthy Archer in her arms.

"In that moment, I forgot about the IV lines and the monitors, only he existed," Casey described the emotional reunion that made the whole hospital tear up and broke the internet.
