She documented the nightmare on TikTok - and was murdered two weeks later
Sera Gilson, an American influencer, shared a viral video in which she revealed that she discovered her estranged husband is a pedophile. 12 days later, he arrived at her home, brutally murdered her, and then committed suicide.
The TikTok platform is full of trends designed to make people laugh or share everyday moments from users' lives. But for Sera Gilson, a 43-year-old internet influencer and hairstylist from Oklahoma, USA, one innocent trend turned into a chilling prophecy that ended in a terrible tragedy.
At the beginning of July, Gilson posted a video for her 30,000 followers, using the well-known 'Netflix trend' (in which users film themselves as if they are preparing for an interview in a documentary). Over the video, she added a chilling caption: 'Preparing for the moment Netflix releases a documentary about my future ex-husband, who I just found out is a pedophile.' In the video description, she added one short sentence: 'I wish I was joking.' The video quickly went viral and accumulated over 15 million views within a few days.
The background to the video soon became clear: a few weeks earlier, it was discovered that her estranged husband, 48-year-old Jeremiah 'Sean' Duffy, who served as a girls' basketball coach, had sexually abused a 15-year-old player on his team. Another coach who caught him in the act intervened immediately and called the authorities. Following the discovery, Sera initiated expedited divorce proceedings and obtained an urgent restraining order against him after he threatened to commit suicide and took weapons with him.
However, despite the restraining order and the fact that she was aware of the danger, the system failed to protect her life. Just 12 days after the video was posted, Duffy arrived in the dead of night at Gilson's home. Her son, who was in the house at the time, managed to escape to the neighbors' house and call the police while screaming that his stepfather was shooting his mother.
When the police broke into the house, it was already too late. They found Gilson and Duffy lifeless, in what the police confirmed as a murder-suicide. Duffy murdered his wife in cold blood and then took his own life. The viral video, which was originally intended to vent pain and warn the public, became the final documentation of a brave woman who tried to escape a dangerous relationship.
