Electronic Arts has announced plans to close its BioWare studio in Edmonton, Canada, marking a seismic shift for one of the most iconic role-playing game developers in the industry. According to reports from Bloomberg, the decision involves canceling an early-stage project within the Mass Effect franchise and cutting approximately 400 jobs company-wide, representing 3% of its total workforce. Roughly 50 of those positions are tied to BioWare.

Strategic Restructuring at EA

The reductions extend beyond BioWare, as EA is also reorganizing the development team behind the upcoming skate game to form a smaller, more focused unit. These moves reflect a broader shift in priorities, with the publisher scaling back large action-adventure initiatives to concentrate on high-yield properties. Projects such as Marvel's Iron Man at Motive and the next Star Wars Jedi title at Respawn Entertainment will continue moving forward, backed by massive global fanbases.

A Storied Legacy in RPGs

Founded in 1995 by physicians Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, BioWare defined Western role-playing games with landmark titles including Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. Following EA's acquisition of the studio in 2007 for approximately $860 million, the developer faced mounting creative and technical challenges, including engine transitions and leadership departures. Recent missteps, such as Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, compounded these pressures, culminating in an abrupt end for a legendary studio.
