A 60-year-old resident of Eilat suffered burns to his face and hair after a medical oxygen tube ignited while he was smoking a cigarette on his balcony. The patient, who relies on home oxygen therapy, told the press that the nasal cannula had accidentally dislodged without his noticing. Moments after he lit a cigarette, the oxygen-enriched environment caused a sudden flare-up. He quickly applied a towel to his head to extinguish the flames and contacted his brother, who rushed him to the emergency room.

Medical staff at Yoseftel Hospital provided immediate treatment, including cooling rinses, specialized dressings, and ointments to prevent infection. The man was subsequently discharged for follow-up care, noting that his face remains severely sensitive to sunlight and recovery will take time.

Anat Ben Moshe, head nurse of the emergency department, emphasized the severe hazards associated with medical oxygen use. Oxygen significantly accelerates combustion, meaning even a tiny spark from a cigarette, match, or electrical device can trigger rapid ignition in an oxygen-rich environment. Medical staff urge patients and their families to strictly adhere to safety protocols, including a complete ban on smoking near oxygen equipment, maintaining at least a three-meter distance from open flames, and ensuring proper room ventilation.
