Drama in London: Google to compensate developers with $353.21 million
Moments before the trial began, the tech giant reached a significant settlement following a lawsuit that accused it of charging unfair commissions of up to 30% and causing severe harm to small businesses.
Google has reached a settlement agreement in a significant class-action lawsuit conducted in London, under which it is expected to pay 260 million pounds (approximately 353.21 million dollars) to app developers in the UK. The agreement was reached shortly before the start of the trial, and it is now awaiting approval from the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
According to a Reuters report, the lawsuit was filed on behalf of app developers who sold their products through the Google Play store in the UK between August 2018 and July 2026. At the center of the proceedings was the claim that Google exploited its market position to restrict options for distributing apps outside its store, while simultaneously charging developers commissions that were considered unfair, and in many cases reached 30%.
The lawsuit was led by academic Barry Rodger, who argued that Google's conduct harmed developers, especially small businesses that could not cope on their own against one of the world's largest technology companies.
The amount agreed upon in the settlement is significantly lower than the scope of the original claim, which was estimated at more than one billion pounds (approximately 1.36 billion dollars). Of the total settlement amount, 160 million pounds (approximately 217.36 million dollars) are expected to be allocated directly to compensate the developers. An additional 100 million pounds (approximately 135.85 million dollars) will be allocated for legal expenses and costs related to managing and financing the proceedings.
Despite the high amount, Google does not admit any liability or wrongdoing as part of the agreement. The company stated that it believes it had significant defense arguments against the lawsuit, but chose to reach a settlement before the trial began.
For the developers, this is a significant achievement, especially for small businesses that would not necessarily have been able to fund a lengthy legal process against Google. Rodger described the outcome as positive and noted that the settlement is expected to provide significant compensation to those affected.
The proceedings join a broader trend in the UK, where courts are dealing with a series of large lawsuits against tech giants. Since the beginning of 2025, proceedings of a similar scale have been filed in the London tribunal against companies such as Apple, Qualcomm, and Sony.
