Many of us have experienced that frustrating moment: opening the dishwasher to check on glassware, only to find a cloudy, milky-white film instead of a sparkling clear finish. Before giving up, a quick solution based on a simple household item can save your glassware.

Why Glassware Turns Cloudy in the Dishwasher

According to the consumer and technology portal Tom's Guide, this cloudy layer is typically caused by one of two primary issues:

  • Mineral buildup from hard water (Fixable): Water in Israel is rich in calcium and magnesium. These minerals bind to fats from dishwasher detergent. Without rinse aid, they bake onto the glass during the heated drying cycle.

  • Glass etching (Permanent damage): If your water is soft, or if you use excessive detergent and extremely high water temperatures, the chemical reaction can physically damage the top layer of the glass.

The 30-Second Vinegar Test

Before running the dishwasher, perform a quick test. Take a cloudy glass, put a single drop of regular household vinegar on it, and rub it lightly with your finger. If the cloudy spot disappears and the glass becomes transparent again, it is mineral buildup and the cleaning trick will work. If the area remains cloudy, it is permanent etching.

Step-by-Step: The Quick Dishwasher Hack

If the vinegar test confirms mineral buildup, follow these steps to restore your glassware:

Place all the cloudy glasses on the top rack of an empty dishwasher. Do not add any detergent or dishwasher tablets to the dispenser.

Fill a dishwasher-safe bowl or measuring cup with two cups of regular white vinegar and place it upright on the top rack among the glasses. Run a standard hot water cycle.

To prevent the issue from returning, regularly check and refill the rinse aid compartment up to the MAX line, as rinse aid breaks surface tension and prevents mineral residue.
