Chuck Russell, the American director behind a series of hits including "The Mask," "The Scorpion King," and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3," has passed away at the age of 74, as reported this Saturday by TMZ. The cause of his death has not yet been determined.

According to the report, Russell died on Wednesday at his home in the San Diego area. Emergency crews were called to the scene in the afternoon following a report of an unconscious man. His family members are traveling to California in an attempt to obtain further details regarding the circumstances of his sudden death.

Russell was best known as the director of the 1994 film "The Mask," starring Jim Carrey. The film was a major commercial success and became one of Carrey's most recognizable roles. During his career, Russell also worked with prominent actors such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dwayne Johnson.

Among the films he directed are "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" (1987), "The Blob" (1988)—which he also wrote—"Eraser" (1996), and "The Scorpion King" (2002). Later, he also directed "I Am Wrath" and "Paradise City." His final film was a remake of the horror movie "Witchboard," released in 2024.

Following his death, Warner Bros. studios posted a picture of Russell with the caption: "Remembering Chuck Russell." Composer Bear McCreary paid tribute to him, calling him a "visionary filmmaker," while film critic Courtney Howard described him as a "versatile talent who knew how to skillfully maneuver between horror, drama, and action."

Russell is survived by his wife Anya, his children Riley and Carlin, and his sister Ann Jacob.
