Contaminated water leads to brain parasite infection
An unusual medical case in the Philippines highlights the environmental risks following natural disasters: a 52-year-old woman was hospitalized with severe neurological symptoms. Scans revealed pork tapeworm larvae in her brain tissue, contracted due to poor sanitary conditions.

An unusual and disturbing medical case in the Philippines demonstrates the environmental dangers inherent in natural disasters: a 52-year-old woman, who had been completely healthy, arrived at the emergency room suffering from severe symptoms — ranging from headaches and hallucinations to the loss of the ability to speak intelligibly. Her brain scans revealed a shocking discovery: tiny larvae of the pork tapeworm had created multiple lumps and pockets within her brain tissue.
The patient's imaging tests clearly showed that her brain was full of fluid-filled pockets inside which the heads of the parasites were hiding. The disease, called neurocysticercosis, is not caused by eating spoiled pork, but by the unconscious ingestion of the worm's eggs — something that usually happens through drinking contaminated water, eating food touched by unwashed hands, or staying in an environment without basic hygiene conditions.
In the patient's case, her home was destroyed in the year preceding her illness as a result of a severe typhoon. Consequently, she was forced to live in a temporary evacuation center that suffered from overcrowding and poor sanitary conditions. After ingesting the eggs, the larvae that hatched in the digestive system were carried with the bloodstream and reached the brain. There they settled, created swellings, and pressed on various areas of the brain — which led to hallucinations and impairment of speech ability.
To the surprise of the medical staff, after targeted drug treatment against parasites and the administration of drugs to reduce swelling in the brain, the woman's body responded in an exceptional way. After only a month, the severe symptoms disappeared almost completely, and imaging tests showed that the cysts in the brain had shrunk significantly. Doctors emphasize that rapid diagnosis of the disease is the line separating full recovery from irreversible brain damage.
Infection with the pork tapeworm is divided into two completely different situations: eating meat that has not been cooked properly causes the worm to develop only in the intestines. In contrast, a real life-threatening danger arises when a person accidentally swallows the tiny eggs of the worm — which come from food or water contaminated with excrement. These eggs do not remain in the intestines: they hatch, penetrate the bloodstream, and can reach sensitive organs such as the eyes, body muscles, and the brain.
