In the first official match since being eliminated from the playoffs, the Saints and the Israeli goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in a 0:2 win against Colchester from the fourth division and secured their place in the second round.
Despite a poor first half, Daniel Peretz and Southampton survived a tense away thriller against Colchester United and secured their place in the second round of the English League Cup thanks to a 0:2 victory. Substitute Kyle Larin (72'), the Canadian who returned to the squad after a long break following the World Cup, headed in the first goal for Southampton in the second half after a cross from Ryan Manning. 20-year-old Romeo Akachukwu (90+2') set the final score of the match in stoppage time.
The Saints sweated for long minutes on the way to victory, and the BBC praised Daniel Peretz, who kept his team in the game. "He was required to make a number of saves," it was written, "and at one point he even recorded a triple save to prevent Colchester from scoring." This was Southampton's first official match since they were eliminated from the Championship promotion playoffs following the spying scandal. Tunde Eckert's team will open its Championship season next weekend, when they will be hosted by Watford.
