Anyone who owns a stainless steel refrigerator, dishwasher, or oven knows the daily frustration: you invest time and effort cleaning and polishing, but just one accidental touch of a palm leaves grease stains and prominent fingerprints. Instead of continuing to waste money on expensive chemical sprays, it turns out the most efficient solution actually comes from the vegetable drawer.

This surprising trick recently made headlines in the renowned lifestyle and culinary magazine The Kitchn, where writer Pallavi Mehra shared the method—a simple, cheap, and highly ecological solution for refreshing kitchen appliances using a cucumber end.

The secret behind the magic lies in the natural composition of the cucumber. The guide explained that the vegetable contains extremely mild acids combined with a high percentage of water, which together manage to quickly soften and break down the natural grease left by fingerprints, as well as light water spots.

Step-by-step: How to do it right

  1. Preparing the vegetable: Cut the thick end of the cucumber—exactly the part we usually slice off and throw straight into the trash.

  2. The scrub: Rub the exposed cucumber flesh directly onto the dirty stainless steel surface. Important emphasis: Make sure to work along the direction of the grain (texture) of the stainless steel to prevent marks or uneven streaks.

  3. The polish: For the perfect result, take a clean, dry microfiber cloth and gently wipe away the moisture residue. The dry microfiber cloth collects the sap and moisture left by the cucumber, leaving a smooth, shiny surface completely free of streaks—without scratches and without unnecessary chemicals in the kitchen space. Next time you make a salad, do not rush to throw away the ends: you have a natural, brilliant cleaning agent right in your hand.
