An antisemitic incident in the MLS against Israel national team striker Dor Turgeman, who was not afraid to respond. Turgeman's team, the New England Revolution, were guests this night (between Saturday and Sunday) in Canada at Montreal, whose fans targeted the Israeli from the very beginning.
According to reports in the United States, several people at the stadium clarified that a series of insults were heard from the stands in Montreal towards Turgeman. Among the chants were "Death to Israel" — an exceptional event when it comes to the MLS.
Turgeman scored in the 36th minute the goal that put the visitors up 2-0, and then a significant commotion broke out. The Israeli taunted the insulting crowd while celebrating with arms spread and signaling to them "I can't hear you." In response to this, beyond the chants that accompanied him throughout the match, fans threw bottles at him.
Montreal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza pushed Turgeman and confronted his teammates. As a result, he received a yellow card. In the second half, New England lost the lead and the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Turgeman, who started, was substituted in the 73rd minute; his teammate Ilay Feingold was not in the squad due to an injury.
The league in the United States has become a popular destination among Israeli footballers since October 7. This is, among other things, because this league is a refuge from the antisemitism that Israelis might encounter in Europe. However, as the Montreal fans proved, antisemitism sometimes rears its head in North America as well.
