Fears of escalation in Europe: Drone exploded near an energy facility in Bulgaria
An unmanned aerial vehicle that entered from the territory of Romania crashed near a gas pipeline at the Kardam border crossing. There were no casualties in the incident, but Sofia and Bucharest fear Russian escalation against the eastern flank of NATO.
An armed drone crashed and exploded today, Saturday, on Bulgarian territory after crossing Romanian airspace and hitting near a sensitive energy facility.
According to the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, the drone entered Bulgarian airspace from Romania before exploding 1,000 meters from a compressor station of the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline, near the Kardam border crossing.
"The noise generated by the drone was detected by the Romanian border police, and subsequently a loud explosion was heard by the 'General Toshevo' border police patrol," he said at a press conference.
He confirmed that the location of the explosion was identified immediately and stated there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure. The Prime Minister admitted that Bulgarian and Romanian authorities were unable to track the drone as it traversed their airspace. Increased surveillance operations have since been activated in the area, and an investigation has been opened to determine the type of drone involved.
According to opposition Member of Parliament Ivaylo Mirchev, Kardam is a central location in the Vertical Gas Corridor, a strategic route for transporting liquefied natural gas from Greece across Southeast and Central Europe. The corridor connects Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
The intrusion follows the downing of three drones by Romanian forces in their airspace over three days in late July. Officials in Romania determined that at least one of those was a Shahed-type drone used by Russian forces.
Both Romania and Bulgaria sit on the eastern flank of NATO, border the Black Sea, and face growing security challenges related to the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022. The attack in Bulgaria is part of a growing wave of escalation between Europe and Russia, following the downing of a small explosive drone last week at the Leipzig airport in Germany near a Ukrainian transport plane loaded with ammunition. US media reported that the CIA believes this is a Russian operation aimed at damaging arms shipments from Europe to Ukraine.
