Security establishment fears dozens of undetected Iranian espionage cases

The security establishment fears there are dozens of undetected espionage cases involving Israeli citizens acting on behalf of Iran. Officials are concerned by an unusual series of incidents in which Israeli citizens have been caught for espionage offenses, some of whom are reservists in sensitive positions.

Security officials claim that resources to handle such an unusual sequence of events are limited. They warn that there may be additional cases that the system has failed to detect, and that sensitive information is currently being transferred to Iran, potentially compromising state security. The primary fear is that a single missed incident could cause severe damage that would be extremely difficult to repair.

Today, a couple from Ashkelon was charged with espionage for Iran after documenting sites in Israel that became targets for attack. The couple, Tramelyan Ashukov and Alina Kushnirko, are accused of carrying out missions under the direction of an Iranian agent. Ashukov was tasked with photographing the homes of defense industry personnel and the grave of Jabotinsky on Mount Herzl, approximately one week before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at the site for a memorial service.
