Commentators warn: LeBron might actually become Philadelphia's problem
Yahoo analyzed the big move and warned that James might interfere with the stars: "He chose a team where he will contribute the least and create the most complications."
LeBron James' move to Philadelphia has quickly become the talk of the sports world, but alongside the immense excitement, skeptical voices are already being heard in the United States. In an analysis published on Yahoo, it is argued that despite the immense talent the Sixers have accumulated, LeBron might be the piece that makes it difficult for everything to click.
"LeBron remains true to the principle that has guided him for more than 15 years: to chase championships without apology," the analysis reads. "There is only one problem: he is probably wrong. If James wanted to choose a team where he could contribute the least and maximize the possible complications, it would be Philadelphia."
Yahoo explained why the choice of the Sixers seems logical from his perspective. Tyrese Maxey is an elite point guard, V.J. Edgecombe is considered a star in the making, Jaylen Brown arrived in a major trade from Boston, and Joel Embiid is still capable of being one of the best players in the league when healthy. From LeBron's perspective, there is a version where he becomes the connecting piece that turns all this talent into a championship team.
However, the central question is whether, at his age and current stage of his career, he can really maximize what is already in Philadelphia, or simply get in the way. "In the best version of this roster, you want the ball in Maxey's hands as much as possible," it was written. "You want Edgecombe to be a relentless finisher, Embiid already consumes a lot of possessions, and now Brown has joined, whose entire game is built on isolations and high ball usage. So what is really left for LeBron?".
LeBron is still considered one of the best players in the league when the ball is in his hands, but Yahoo noted that in recent years he has been less effective off the ball, and also does not invest the same amount of energy on defense. They argue that the most significant skills he has left overlap to a large extent with what Philadelphia already has on offense, while on the other side of the court he might further highlight their defensive problems.
His status in the locker room and in the starting lineup may also become a delicate experiment. "Seeing one of the greatest players ever become a third or fourth option, during a prolonged farewell tour, will be a delicate dance on the court and a chemical experiment on the most intriguing team in the league," it was written. "Maybe LeBron is capable of becoming a pure role player at this stage, but the end of his time with the Lakers showed how uncomfortable he is when he is not running the show."
The analysis also mentioned LeBron's influence on the construction of the rosters he played on. Throughout much of his career, he managed to choose the players around him well, partly because he was able to raise the level of almost every player who played alongside him. But in recent years the picture has changed, and now his success will depend more on his ability to integrate into an existing system than on the demand that the system be adapted to him.
"James chose to end his career in a new city, in unfamiliar uniforms, and with a group of players who probably don't need him to realize their potential," the commentator concluded. "It could be great, it could be a disaster, but it is definitely going to be weird."
Another senior Yahoo commentator presented a slightly more balanced picture. He mentioned that LeBron averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds last season, and that if he leads Philadelphia to a championship as well, he will become 4 for 4 in winning with the teams he played for, after two championships in Miami and one each in Cleveland and Los Angeles.
That same commentator emphasized that Philadelphia has built a deep and diverse roster, which also includes Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade, Labron Philon, Dominick Barlow, and Ariel Hukporti. According to him, it is possible that the individual numbers of the stars will drop due to the distribution of the load, but the club will be willing to accept this if the result is winning a championship.
Ultimately, according to him, everything will rise and fall on health. Embiid has played an average of only 32 games per season over the last three years, and LeBron, despite being relatively healthy recently, suffered from significant injuries in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons. Brown is considered particularly durable, but he too arrives after long years of load and deep playoff runs.
"You can't build a team out of fear," the commentator concluded. "The club must try to assemble the best combination of talent it can." In Philadelphia, they believe that is exactly what they did.
