Panettiere, who was set to celebrate her 37th birthday this week, began her career in the entertainment industry as a child. Her big break came in 2006 when she played Claire Bennet in the science fiction series "Heroes," a cheerleader with the ability to heal herself. Later, she starred for six seasons in the musical drama "Nashville" as country star Juliette Barnes, a role for which she was nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award. Among her notable film roles were the movies "Remember the Titans," "I Love You, Beth Cooper," and "Scream 4." In 2023, she returned to play Kirby Reed in the film "Scream 6."
Panettiere is survived by her daughter Kaya, whom she had with her former partner, boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko. In recent years, Panettiere spoke openly about a series of personal and health crises. In an interview published in 2022, she shared that she had struggled with an addiction to opioids and alcohol, which began when she was a teenager and worsened over the years. According to her, when she was 15, she was first offered "happy pills" before walking the red carpet, and later, drugs and alcohol became something she felt she could not live without. She described the period as a "cycle of self-destruction" and said: "I was on top of the world — and I ruined it."
After the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014, Panettiere also dealt with postpartum depression. Her condition deteriorated until she was hospitalized after suffering from jaundice, and according to her, doctors warned her that her liver was in danger. She later underwent trauma therapy and spent eight months in a rehabilitation facility. In 2018, her daughter moved to live with her father — a decision Panettiere described as one of the hardest of her life, but explained that she made it to protect her daughter and provide her with a stable environment.
Her personal life also included an abusive relationship with Brian Hickerson, who was arrested more than once for assaulting her and was later convicted and sent to prison. Panettiere said that the relationship further damaged her mental health and that she was hospitalized several times for treatment. In an interview published last May, she said she is on good terms with her daughter and Klitschko, but is estranged from her mother. In that same interview, conducted ahead of the publication of her autobiography, she also revealed that she is bisexual and shared that for years she was afraid to speak about it publicly.
