Chinese Woman Duped by AI Persona Embarks on Train Journey to Find Fake Youth
A 79-year-old Chinese woman boarded a train to meet an online acquaintance who turned out to be an AI-generated persona used in a commercial scam targeting elderly loneliness.

A 79-year-old woman from China embarked on a long solo train journey without informing her family, hoping to meet a young online acquaintance known as "Xiao Hai" who affectionately called her "aunt". Railway police intervened after noticing the confused elderly passenger, uncovering a disturbing reality.
The incident, which occurred last May, recently resurfaced following an investigation into a viral online phenomenon in China. It emerged that the youth does not exist, but is instead an artificial intelligence-generated persona created as part of a campaign designed to evoke sympathy among older women and drive product sales.
The Mechanics of the Online Scam
The promotional videos feature a young boy weeping on camera, recounting a difficult childhood, poverty, and abandonment, sometimes describing how he must make do with a simple bun while his peers eat proper meals. After stirring the viewers' compassion, he asks them to purchase various goods to support him.
According to reports from Sixth Tone, the hashtag associated with the persona garnered over 620 million views on the Chinese social network Douyin. Account operators behind the videos utilize similar characters and fabricated narratives to market products, frequently at inflated prices.
Intervention and Public Debate
In the elderly woman's case, officers managed to convince her that the person she sought to visit was fictitious. They contacted her family, who subsequently arranged a return ticket home.
The affair has sparked widespread discussion in China regarding the exploitation of elderly loneliness through emerging technologies and the ease with which emotive online storytelling can be weaponized into commercial sales operations.
