American children's fashion giant The Children's Place is facing severe financial distress and is on the brink of bankruptcy, threatening the future of 30 retail stores operating in Israel under the Fox-Wizel Group franchise.

According to Bloomberg reports, the New Jersey-based retailer is preparing for potential bankruptcy protection filings or a rapid asset sale to stay afloat. The company is burdened by approximately $342 million in debt, driven by shifting post-pandemic consumer habits, declining physical store traffic, and fierce competition from e-commerce platforms and low-cost chains.

The crisis intensified following an 8% drop in same-store sales, prompting a massive sell-off on Wall Street. The company's stock has plummeted by roughly 90% since the beginning of the year, trading at historic lows reminiscent of its 1997 IPO price. To avert total collapse, The Children's Place relied on emergency lifeboats from its primary shareholder, Saudi investment firm Mithaq Capital, which injected $15 million in July and another $25 million in September.

These developments have direct implications for the Fox-Wizel Group, which holds the exclusive Israeli franchise for the brand, operating 30 stores in leading malls and selling items via Terminal X. Long viewed as a weaker link in Fox's portfolio, a liquidation by the parent company without a buyer to maintain international franchises would likely force Harel Wiesel to surrender the franchise, leading to the closure of all 30 Israeli branches.
