Hundreds of enthusiastic spectators crowded the Pacifica beach in Northern California last weekend to witness one of the most unusual and heartwarming sporting events in the world: a surfing competition for dogs. The event, which marks a decade of continuous activity, attracted dogs of all breeds and sizes. Wearing colorful life vests, they stood on surfboards and demonstrated spectacular performances on the water to the cheers of the crowd on the beach.

It turns out this is not just a game, but a full-fledged sporting competition. The dogs are divided into weight categories, and the judges evaluate them according to strict criteria: the length of time they manage to remain stable on the surfboard, the size of the wave they catch, and the level of confidence they display. In addition to individual heats, there are also pair competitions in which two dogs share one surfboard, and even a heat where the dog surfs together with its owner.

The one who stole the show at the competition is Rusty, a miniature pinscher wearing a green-spotted life vest with a shark fin on his back and professional surfing goggles. His owner, Sophia Sadlowski, said that she put him on a surfboard just to take a picture when he was a puppy:

"But then he just didn't want to get off."

Rusty, who participated in his first competition at the age of four months and won third place, has since become an experienced surfer starring in both pair heats and small dog categories.

Behind all this fun, the waves, and the viral photos, hides an equally important goal. The annual competition is actually a huge charity event for animals. Alongside the surfing heats, a festive pet adoption fair is held on the beach, and the entire event is dedicated to raising donations for local organizations. It is a perfect combination of sport, adrenaline, and a lot of love for our four-legged friends.
