Brittney Griner Files for Divorce: "The Relationship Is Irretrievably Broken"

WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from Cherelle, marking the likely end of their eight-year marriage. According to court documents obtained by Complex, Griner filed the petition on Thursday in Fulton County, Georgia. Reports indicate that the two have been living separately since July 24, 2026.

In the divorce filing, Griner described their relationship as "irretrievably broken," signaling that there is no prospect for reconciliation. The couple shares a two-year-old son, Bash, born in July 2024. According to the documents, Griner is requesting joint physical custody of the child, both on a temporary and permanent basis. Additionally, she has asked the court to establish child support payments in accordance with Georgia state law.

Regarding assets, Griner is seeking an equitable division of all property accumulated during the marriage, including real estate and personal assets, both tangible and intangible. The couple first met while they were students at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Cherelle, an attorney, was a central figure in the public campaign for Griner's release from prison in Russia in late 2022. The WNBA star was arrested in February of that year after vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were discovered in her luggage.

She was charged with drug smuggling in a country where marijuana is illegal, and roughly six months later, she was sentenced to nine years in prison. In December 2022, she was released as part of a prisoner exchange deal between the USA and Russia.
