Brazilian Football Faces Financial Crisis After Sweeping Betting Ban
Brazilian football faces severe economic turmoil after President Lula da Silva banned betting companies, threatening major clubs like Flamengo with bankruptcy and halting sponsorships.
Absolute panic has gripped Brazilian football following a decree by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva imposing a sweeping ban on betting companies nationwide. Users have until October 5 to withdraw their funds, with all licensed operator websites and apps shutting down completely on October 6.
The decree deals a severe blow to the industry, coming after a single leading betting firm invested over €400 million in Brazilian football over the past two years alone. This season, 14 football clubs feature legal betting companies as primary sponsors, sharing a total of €200 million. Furthermore, the Brazilian Football Confederation holds a league, cup, and super cup sponsorship deal with the same firm valued at €34 million per season.
As part of the fallout, powerhouse club Flamengo, which secured a golden double by winning the league and Copa Libertadores, now faces the very real threat of bankruptcy. The club was slated to receive €45 million in 2026 alone, and without betting revenue, income from other sponsors will not cover even half of its star players' payroll.
Leading clubs such as Palmeiras, Fluminense, and Botafogo find themselves in a similarly explosive situation. Having all won the Copa Libertadores at various points over the past seven years, these clubs now confront a threatening new economic reality endangering their continued operations.
