New Home Urine Test Detects Bladder Cancer with Over 92% Accuracy
A clinical trial in the UK reveals that the GALEAS Bladder genetic urine test detects bladder cancer with high accuracy, potentially saving thousands from invasive cystoscopy procedures.

A major medical breakthrough in the UK is set to transform the diagnosis and management of bladder cancer. A large-scale clinical trial conducted across seven National Health Service (NHS) medical centers has demonstrated that a simple, non-invasive home urine test can detect over 92% of bladder cancer cases.
The innovative test, developed by the University of Birmingham in collaboration with the biotechnology company Nonacus, is designed to streamline the triage of patients presenting with symptoms such as blood in their urine (hematuria), preventing them from undergoing unnecessary invasive procedures.
Advanced Genetic Sequencing
The technology, named GALEAS Bladder, utilizes advanced genetic sequencing to detect tumor DNA fragments shed from bladder cells into the urine. The test screens for more than 450 distinct genetic mutations across 23 genes associated with malignant bladder tumors.
In a study involving 964 participants, the test successfully identified 100% of muscle-invasive bladder cancer cases and 35 out of 36 high-grade tumors. The most significant finding was its negative predictive value: a negative test result provides a 99.3% probability that the patient is free of the disease.
Reducing the Burden on Healthcare Systems
Currently, the standard clinical investigation for hematuria requires a cystoscopy—an invasive and uncomfortable procedure where a small camera is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. In the UK alone, over 300,000 cystoscopies are performed annually, leading to long waiting lists and high healthcare costs.
Researchers estimate that integrating this home urine kit as a primary screening tool would safely defer cystoscopies for low-risk patients, saving approximately 730 invasive procedures for every 1,000 patients tested.
Professor Amos Neeman, Head of the Urology Department at Meir Medical Center (part of the Clalit Group), explained:
"Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer among men and the eighth among women. It is characterized by high recurrence rates, which demand long-term, continuous monitoring."
He noted that the new test represents a major technological leap because it targets DNA in urine rather than proteins. However, Professor Neeman emphasized that at this stage, the test is primarily intended for initial screening and does not yet completely replace cystoscopy when a positive result is obtained.
