Bill Gates Warns AI Could Enable Biological Weapons and Global Disaster
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned that advanced artificial intelligence could enable hostile actors to develop biological weapons, posing a global threat far exceeding COVID-19.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could assist hostile actors in developing biological weapons, potentially triggering a disaster far worse than the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview published by the Financial Times, Gates stressed that AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful and accessible, while governments struggle to keep pace with their rapid evolution.
Gates noted that this threat extends beyond the distant future, pointing out that AI is already capable of identifying security vulnerabilities in systems used by hospitals, banks, and power grids. As these capabilities improve, the potential for exploiting them in large-scale cyberattacks increases correspondingly.
Emerging Models and Oversight Challenges
Gates estimated that advanced AI models are slated for release later this year and throughout 2027, bringing enhanced capabilities that will pose unprecedented safety and regulatory challenges. He criticized the current lack of sufficient international oversight and the difficulty of establishing common rules without substantial involvement from the USA.
To mitigate these growing risks, Gates called for stricter safety testing of advanced AI systems, enhanced protection for critical infrastructure, and the expansion of early-warning systems for disease outbreaks. Despite his stark warnings, Gates maintains that artificial intelligence remains an extraordinary opportunity for advancing medicine and science, provided that robust safeguards are enacted to prevent misuse.
