Hollywood actor and Oscar-winning director Ben Affleck provided a candid and unusual glimpse into the entertainment industry's struggle with the artificial intelligence revolution. Speaking at Bloomberg's Screentime conference in Los Angeles over the weekend, Affleck revealed that his initial encounter with the technology sparked deep anxiety, leading him to make a panicked emergency call to his partner and close friend, actor Matt Damon.

Affleck shared that due to his involvement in establishing a visual effects company and his status as a Hollywood celebrity, he received early access to secret developments from Google and OpenAI laboratories. "At first, I had a kind of heart attack," Affleck recalled from the stage. "I immediately called Matt Damon and told him: 'Bro, we have to produce as many movies as possible in the coming years – because we're done, our story is over'." However, after the initial shock, the actor decided to learn the technology in depth instead of fighting it.

Identifying the Moral Weakness in Tech Giants

Affleck quickly identified the moral vulnerability in the commercial models of tech giants: training algorithms on the works of filmmakers without their permission or compensation. "I was very troubled by the fact that most of the models used were trained on the work of my colleagues – people I know personally. I felt uncomfortable with it, and I thought it wasn't a sustainable business model," Affleck explained, emphasizing that while learning models grasp basic concepts like colors from free online materials, they need professional, cinematic-grade materials to understand true filmmaking.

"I immediately called Matt Damon and told him: 'Bro, we have to produce as many movies as possible in the coming years – because we're done, our story is over'."

Affleck's solution was establishing a dedicated company that raised capital and spent eight months on massive field shoots to generate an independent, original database for training open models. The system's goal is to allow filmmakers to harness artificial intelligence as an aid to production and editing teams while preserving the copyrights and intellectual property of every production.

Practical Implementation in Upcoming Films

As part of the applied experiment, Affleck confirmed that he embedded AI tools in his new film Animals, set to hit US theaters this coming weekend, though he declined to reveal the exact method of use.

Affleck emphasized that AI tools are not meant to "replace humans" or erase the role of artists, but rather to streamline expensive production processes and allow working "hand in hand" with creators. The movie star's insights reflect Hollywood's gradual shift – from a blanket boycott and fears of professional extinction to practical attempts to shape technology so that it serves human art instead of crushing it.
