"Back up your data now": WhatsApp is blocking Israeli users without explanation
The Israel Internet Association has reported dozens of complaints regarding unexplained WhatsApp account blocks. With Meta yet to provide an official response, users are advised to back up their data and prepare for potential service disruptions.
Over the weekend, the Israel Internet Association's safe internet hotline received dozens of reports from users stating that their WhatsApp accounts had been blocked without any clear explanation.
According to the association, users remain without access to the application even after filing appeals. At this stage, the cause of the phenomenon and the total number of affected users remain unknown. An urgent inquiry was sent to Meta requesting assistance in resolving these cases and clarifying the source of the malfunction, but no response has been received to date.
The association believes this is a technical glitch that has not yet been addressed and warns that the number of blocks could continue to rise in the coming days. Given that WhatsApp is installed on approximately 99% of Israel's adult population, any large-scale disruption significantly impacts the public.

Beware of private entities offering to remove blocks for a fee; these are scams, as only Meta has the authority and capability to restore account access.

Users who have not yet been affected are strongly advised to back up photos, documents, and important information immediately, and to establish alternative communication channels with family, friends, and colleagues.
The association notes that this incident highlights the high level of public dependence on WhatsApp and the difficulties that arise when a central service is disabled without explanation or timely support.
"The current wave is a stark reminder of the centralization and over-reliance of the public in Israel on an application that does not provide a full response or adequate service in the event of a malfunction," the association stated.
Furthermore, the association is calling on the State of Israel to demand full transparency from Meta regarding the reasons for these blocks and to insist on an immediate response for users who have been left without access to one of their primary means of communication.
