Dramatic warning regarding Chabad House in Sri Lanka: "Before there are casualties"

MK Avi Maoz, chairman of the Noam party, sent a warning on Monday to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar following the attack on the Chabad House in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. He called for immediate intervention with the country's authorities to prevent the situation from worsening.

MK Maoz demanded that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs act now:

"I request your urgent intervention with the authorities in Sri Lanka to ensure the safety of the Chabad emissaries and the Israelis at the location, before there are, God forbid, casualties or property damage."

In his letter, MK Maoz emphasized the role that Chabad Houses play for Israelis and Jews around the world. According to him, in places where there is no Israeli representation, Chabad emissaries effectively assist Israelis and serve as a central address for them.

"It is the duty of the State of Israel to do everything in its power to assist the Chabad emissaries, ensure their safety, and verify that they can continue their important work in complete security," he stated.

The demand comes against the backdrop of local protests against the Chabad House. Over the weekend, local residents and Buddhist monks demonstrated in front of the site, calling for its closure, which has intensified tensions surrounding its activity as a hub for Israelis and Jews staying in the area.
