At the Venice Film Festival: A film on "Israel's method of killing Palestinian civilians"

The Venice Film Festival has added to its official competition NAZA (an English transliteration of the acronym for 'collateral damage') — a new documentary film that describes, according to its synopsis, the systems behind the calculated mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza by Israel.

The film was directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Shor, two of the four directors of "No Other Land", which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2025. The film will be screened in the festival's main hall on September 10 at 17:15, in the presence of the directors, producers, Guardian journalists, and members of the film's delegation.

It was produced by The Guardian and James Wilson of JW Films, and the executive producer is the British-Jewish director and screenwriter Jonathan Glazer — who in his 2024 Oscar acceptance speech caused a stir when he addressed the war in Gaza and said he refuses to see his Jewishness and the Holocaust hijacked by an occupation.

"No Other Land", on which Abraham and Shor worked together with Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal, focuses on the struggle of the residents of Masafer Yatta in the southern Hebron Hills against the demolition of their homes and the displacement of Palestinians from the area. The film has won a series of awards, including the Berlin Film Festival award, the Gotham Award, the New York Film Critics Circle Award, and the European Film Award.

In March 2025, "No Other Land" won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, and in their acceptance speech, the creators called on the world to act to stop what they called the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. Abraham also addressed the Israeli hostages and the war in Gaza:

"When I look at Basel, we are brothers — but we are not equal. There is another way. A political solution without ethnic supremacy with national rights for both our peoples."
