Arsenal announced on Saturday the signing of Bruno Guimarães on a four-year contract with an option for an additional season. According to reports, the Gunners paid Newcastle approximately £75 million for the Brazilian national team midfielder.

28-year-old Guimarães parted ways with Newcastle and said:

"This move is very difficult for me, because Newcastle is very significant to me, but I wanted to experience something new in my life."

He arrived at the club in January 2022 for about £40 million, after playing for two years at the French club Lyon. Last March, he became the first captain of the club to lift a domestic cup after 70 years and any trophy after 56 years, when Newcastle defeated Liverpool in the final and won the League Cup. He contributed 31 goals for the Magpies in 195 appearances across all competitions.

A force of nature.

Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, welcomed the signing:

"Bruno is a player with a great mentality and high quality, who will bring significant leadership to our squad. With Bruno's arrival, we are further strengthening the center of the team. As we have all seen, he is capable of playing both as a defensive midfielder and as a 'box-to-box' midfielder. He combines quality with relentless work, and in every season contributes goals and assists to his team. Bruno will allow Mikel Arteta to continue developing our style of play, and will also increase internal competition in the squad - something essential to maintain the required standards as we aim to win the biggest titles."

This is Arsenal's second acquisition this summer, following the addition of the Greek Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for 40 million euros. Additionally, the option on Piero Hincapié was exercised for a similar sum from Bayer Leverkusen, and goalkeeper Illan Meslier arrived on a free transfer from Leeds.
