The epicenter was located approximately 10 kilometers south of the historic city of Granada at a depth of less than 10 kilometers, according to Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN). This tremor is the latest in a series of shallow quakes that have been felt in the region since last Friday.
Falling debris damaged several vehicles, and various museums, administrative buildings, and sports centers were forced to close. The famous Alhambra Palace in Granada, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was also closed for structural assessment.
Local residents described the quake as particularly intense. Alfonso Malpica, a Granada resident, told the newspaper "El País" that the tremor was "stronger than the ones that happen from time to time, the ones we are used to." The Granada metro network announced it is reducing train speeds as a safety precaution.
