Last Thursday, 69-year-old Yaakov Buzaglo, a former footballer and head of a prominent family, took to Facebook to reveal his political stance for the first time. "I am not ashamed to be a leftist," he shared in a lengthy post explaining his positions. Now, he reflects on the storm that has erupted since he went public.
"I admit, I was surprised myself—not by the debate, but by the intensity of the reaction. Thousands of comments, hundreds of shares, countless private messages, media inquiries, and even an approach from representatives of the Democrats party for cooperation. I have chosen not to rush. I want to think, listen, and above all, remain true to myself," Buzaglo admitted.
"What really surprised me was that people were shocked to discover I am a leftist. I am almost 70 years old. All my life, I have voted for left-wing parties. This is not a new decision, not a momentary protest, and not an attempt to attract attention. This is my worldview, and it has accompanied me for decades. Therefore, it was natural for me to call on everyone who believed in this path in the past not to be ashamed of it today."
Buzaglo added that he does not believe one should apologize for their political views: "In a democracy, every person has the right to believe in their own path, as long as they respect the right of others to think differently. It is enough to look at my own home to understand this. We have different opinions, and in my extended family, not everyone thinks like me. And that is perfectly fine. I am not looking for a party or a team that I will agree with on every word. I choose the path and the values that speak to me, not perfect people. I am not looking for a position, a headline, or publicity. What interests me is the path."
He concluded: "When I look at the values I have believed in all my life—democracy, equality, social responsibility, the rule of law, and the aspiration for a better society—I feel that this is still the right path for me. Democracy is not measured by everyone thinking the same thing, but by the fact that everyone can express their opinion without fear or shame. Perhaps it is time for those who have believed in this path for years to stop hiding. I am not ashamed of my path. I have never been ashamed, and I do not intend to start now."
