The British coffee shop chain Merrie England, which operated for about 60 years, has announced the immediate cessation of its operations and the closure of all its branches. Following this decision, dozens of employees were laid off, having received notice only a few hours before the locations were shut down.

The chain, founded in 1966, operated 7 coffee shops in the West Yorkshire area, including in the towns of Huddersfield, Halifax, and Brighouse. Over the years, it became a well-known hangout for local residents, with a menu featuring sandwiches, pastries, cakes, and traditional dishes.

In a statement released by the company, it was noted that the decision followed a prolonged struggle with rising costs of raw materials, business rates, energy prices, and wage costs, alongside the impact of government policy. The company further stated that, in parallel with soaring expenses, there was a decrease in customer numbers and spending, as many are unable or unwilling to pay the prices currently required to sustain business operations.

The company described it as an "especially difficult decision" and thanked customers for their support throughout the decades. Management also expressed that their thoughts are with the employees who lost their jobs following the closure.

According to reports in the UK, staff received notice of the closure on the evening before the branches were locked, while customers arriving the next day found the doors shut. Many stated they had no prior knowledge of the decision.

The announcement of the end of Merrie England's operations sparked numerous reactions on social media. Long-time customers shared memories of their visits over the years, expressing sadness over the loss of a chain that had been a staple of the local community for decades.
