Al-Sayed jabs at Trump's marriage: "A bit of a rocky love"
Abdul Al-Sayed, who won the Democratic primary for the Senate seat in Michigan, responded to Donald Trump's social media post, contrasting the president's marriage with his own relationship.
Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan Abdul Al-Sayed addressed the marriage of US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on Sunday, claiming their relationship is "a bit rocky," as reported by the New York Post.
The remarks were made during a CNN broadcast, one day after Donald Trump posted a picture of himself and Melania alongside a photo of Al-Sayed and his wife, Sarah Jukaku, on his social media account. Trump captioned the image: "Two very different Americas."
"Actually, Sarah and I like each other," Al-Sayed told host Jake Tapper. "I don't know about the First Lady and the President, but from what I've heard, it's a bit of a rocky road."
Al-Sayed, who identifies as a progressive, won the Democratic primary for the Michigan Senate seat last week by a narrow margin against moderate House member Haley Stevens.
Donald Trump and Melania have been married since 2005 and have a son, Barron. Al-Sayed and his wife, both physicians, married in 2006 after meeting as students at the University of Michigan. The couple has two daughters, Emely and Serin, and they reside in Ann Arbor.
Al-Sayed cynically agreed with Trump's assertion that they represent "different Americas," stating:
"He's right — there are two different visions of America: one where your rulers are two people who don't like each other but are united by the interest of profiting billions from you, or two people who actually like each other."
