Ahavat Hashem Gordon recorded one of the greatest moments of his career this evening (Monday), defeating John Lineker in the main event of GFN 1 in front of a full Menora Mivtachim Arena. Thousands of spectators in the stands provided an extraordinary atmosphere and turned the Gordon family's martial arts event into a major Israeli celebration, which was also attended by Israeli All-Star Deni Avdija, who came to the arena to watch the fights.
The huge victory of the evening: Brazilian John Lineker arrived at the fight with rich experience and a record of 37:11, while Ahavat Hashem Gordon stood against him with a perfect record of 12:0. To thunderous applause from the local crowd, the Israeli started determinedly, aiming for a 13th victory, but Lineker used his experience, landed several punches to the stomach, and despite a precise strike by Gordon that caused his opponent to bleed, the Brazilian finished strong and took the first round. The picture changed completely in the second round, when Lineker began to show signs of fatigue and struggled to make contact. Gordon identified the opportunity, quickly regained his composure, and took control of the fight with a great combination of punches and kicks. At the end of the round, which clearly went in favor of the Israeli, the Menora Arena shook with roars of support from the crowd.
Over the past year, Gordon has become one of the most prominent and talked-about athletes in Israel. With sharp instincts, he identified well what was missing for local martial arts to break through to the general public: boundless trash talk, charisma, and playing precisely on national sentiment. His fight against Turkish opponent Ali Koyuncu, built around the rivalry between the countries, managed to arouse huge interest even at the height of the football season. This evening, Gordon already received the biggest stage one can get in Israeli sports. In front of full stands and Israeli flags, he provided the crowd with the moment it was waiting for and defeated Lineker, an experienced fighter who had previously appeared in the world's biggest arenas. At the end of the event, held under the sponsorship of Mania, the Israeli celebrated with the crowd and provided the highlight of the evening.
All three brothers from the Gordon family participated in the event. Alongside Ahavat Hashem's main fight against Lineker, Ruach Hashem Gordon competed against Maximus Bejanote in a Muay Thai fight, while Kivdi Gordon met Jose Alberto Quinonez.
Knockout in 45 seconds
The first of the Gordon family members to compete was Kivdi Gordon, who won by a quick knockout against 35-year-old Mexican Jose Alberto "Teco" Quinonez. The highlight of the fight was less than 45 seconds in, with a tremendous kick to the head of "Teco," from which he could not get up and had to accept his loss by knockout.
Ruach Hashem in an impressive victory
After a tremendous fight, Ruach Hashem Gordon won by judges' decision against Moldovan Maximus Bejanote. Although he did not end the fight with a spectacular knockout like his brother, he gave his all, with a great fight in which he showed absolute superiority throughout all rounds, leaving his opponent with no answers, who looked helpless in all rounds. In the third round, the Moldovan realized he was on his way to a loss and stepped up a gear, but Ruach maintained his ability and continued to strike his opponent without stopping. After the judges' decision, Ruach Hashem defeated Maximus Bejanote and completed 2 out of 2 for the Gordon brothers.
The main card also included some of the most prominent names in Israeli combat sports. Natan Levy, with a background in the UFC, faced Lando Vannata in an intriguing kickboxing fight, Eli Arad met Lucas Almeida in an MMA fight, and Nili Block faced Isabella Celestino in a Muay Thai fight.
Israel has had professional and high-quality fighters over the years, as well as a large and loyal audience of MMA and other combat sports fans. The Gordon family managed to take the next step: taking martial arts into the mainstream and turning a fight night into a sold-out show. The achievement gained additional significance given the current period. This was the first international sporting event held at the Menora Mivtachim Arena since the security situation led to the removal of Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv's Euroleague games from Israel. While quite a few artists refuse to come to the country, the GFN organizers managed to bring a series of fighters from abroad here. Even if not all of them belong to the world's top tier, the very fact of holding the event in an international format and in a full arena was an impressive achievement. At least for one evening, martial arts in Israel came out of the small halls and received the main stage. Gordon won in the ring, but the greater achievement was the very existence of an international fight night in front of a full arena. Now it remains to be seen whether GFN 1 was a one-time event – or the beginning of a new tradition.
