Diplomatic confrontation: US representatives walk out of UN Security Council over French rhetoric
Political tension between Washington and Paris continues to escalate, marked by mutual insults and a diplomatic boycott at the UN.
US representatives walked out in protest during the French ambassador's speech at the UN Security Council. The move followed a statement by the French delegation claiming that the United States is isolated and that the world no longer listens to it. The US representative hit back, announcing that the boycott would continue until France abandons its condescending and disrespectful rhetoric.
Political tension between the United States and France has gradually increased since President Donald Trump entered the White House, escalating this week into a full-blown diplomatic confrontation. The US delegation walked out of Monday's Security Council meeting to protest French criticism, which compared Washington's voting pattern on human rights issues to that of dictatorial states.
The friction began last week when the United States joined North Korea and Russia in voting against extending the term of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. The French delegation issued an unusual public rebuke on the X network:
"The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore. Today, it stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali & Russia, isolated. And the world no longer listens to it."
The post sparked outrage in Washington, leading the US delegation to vacate their seats during the French ambassador's remarks. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz hit back at France, claiming it lectures democratic countries while fawning over the world's most notorious oppressors.
US representative Dan Negrea announced that the delegation would continue such protest measures until France retracts its stance:
"This insincere pretense and moralizing boasting are already tiring, but we endured them out of a sense of brotherhood and mutual respect as permanent members of the Security Council. We stood by that country in every conflict where its freedoms were at risk, and today I remind it that the United States is the one that still remains the beacon of freedom for the world. We will not continue to grant it the right to have us listen to its political babble, until it abandons its condescending and disrespectful rhetoric and behaves in a manner appropriate to its place in the Security Council."
Volker Türk has previously criticized both Russia's war in Ukraine and Israel's military conduct in the Gaza Strip, which fueled opposition to his candidacy in Washington. Conversely, French Ambassador Bonafont described Türk as a "voice of conscience," praising his rigor and objectivity during his first term.
