Left bodies to rot and distributed fake ashes: The punishment of the "funeral home from hell" director
A British funeral home director was sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to a series of horrific crimes committed over 12 years. He hid bodies in a warehouse, stole donation money, and distributed urns containing strangers' ashes to 50 families. "It's like going back to the darkest period of my life," testified a mother who discovered that her baby's ashes were thrown in a bag on the floor.
Robert Bush, a 48-year-old funeral home director from the UK, was sentenced on Friday to 20 years in prison at the conclusion of a trial that exposed one of the most shocking cases of fraud and desecration of the dead in the kingdom's history.
Bush was sentenced at a court in the city of Hull in northeast England, following a tense hearing that lasted five days, during which more than 200 victims described the destruction he caused. He pleaded guilty to no fewer than 67 counts related to crimes he committed over 12 years at the business he managed, "Legacy Independent Funeral Directors."
Among the testimonies heard in the courtroom was that of Jasmine Beverley, whose son Sunny was stillborn in May 2022. At the time, Bush handed her a small blue vessel, promising her that Sunny's ashes were inside. However, more than a year later, police investigators found the baby's real ashes discarded inside a brown paper bag on the floor of the funeral home.
"When I found out what happened, it reopened the trauma in a way I cannot describe in words," Beverley testified in tears. "It felt like being sucked back into the darkest period of my life. The grief, the anxiety, and the distress returned with such intensity that I found myself struggling mentally and emotionally again."
The slip of the tongue that led to the exposure
Beverley's case is not unique. About 50 people discovered that the ashes they had received were not those of their loved ones, after police raided the funeral home and found urns and packaging that still bore the names of the deceased.
The chilling affair was exposed by chance in March 2024. While Bush was on vacation in Arizona, he asked managers of another funeral company to assist in collecting a body in his absence. An employee of Bush, who spoke with representatives of the other company, blurted out that there were bodies being held at the complex "for years."
The shocked colleagues rushed to call the police, who discovered at the site what prosecutors described as a "horror scene": bodies in various stages of decomposition were stored neglectfully on shelves in the cooling area, and the body of a naked person was found lying on a stretcher directly on the floor.
Alongside the severe frauds concerning the dead themselves, Bush ran a calculated financial scam. The indictment reveals that he defrauded 172 people of a total sum of 562,000 pounds (more than 2,310,000 shekels), among other things by selling fictitious funeral plans. During memorial services, he used to collect cash donations from the grieving crowd — supposedly for charities that the families wished to donate to — and pocketed the money.
