Hackney Council leader Zoe Garbett has informed Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav of her council’s intention to terminate the twin-city agreement, requesting a response by October 7. The Haifa municipality is currently consulting with the Israeli Foreign Ministry on how to address the request.

The Green-controlled council in Hackney has initiated a process to cancel the 1968 twinning agreement with Haifa. Labour and Conservative members criticized the move as a "divisive and symbolic step," while the Jewish community described it as "spite over logic."
