A new study from Flinders University in Australia has revealed that the "fecal revolution" about 540 million years ago was a major catalyst for the development of biodiversity and complex ecosystems. By analyzing ancient fossilized feces, the researchers show how digested food created an evolutionary feedback loop that made Earth habitable.
