Zheng Qinwen Makes History with Beijing Title Victory
Zheng Qinwen made history by winning the Beijing tournament after defeating Mirra Andreeva, claiming her first WTA 1000 title on home soil.
Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen captured the Beijing tournament title on Sunday following an impressive 7:5, 6:4 victory over Mirra Andreeva, who is set to climb from fifth to third in the world rankings. Zheng secured her second title on home soil and her first-ever WTA 1000 crown, making history as the first local player to triumph in Beijing. By winning the tournament, she will jump from 54th to 23rd in the global rankings.
Remarkably, Zheng dropped 78 games on her path to the championship—the most of any WTA 1000 champion since the format was introduced in 1990. The previous record was held by Belinda Bencic, who dropped 66 games in Toronto in 2015 and 65 in Dubai in 2019.
Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev secured his 60th victory of 2026 after surviving a thriller to advance to the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters, defeating France's Quentin Halys 4:6, 7:6(10), 3:6. The world number two and top seed will face Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik in the next round.
