Simin Reaches Round of 16 at Baku World Judo Championships

The sixth day of the World Judo Championships in Baku featured a single Israeli representative: Yossif Simin, competing in the under-100 kg weight category. The 25-year-id Israeli judoka started the day with two impressive victories before bowing out in the round of 16 against the Netherlands' Simeon Catharina, who is ranked third in the world.

Simin, ranked 26th globally, began his campaign against Colombia's Francisco Balanta (ranked 56th). He secured a brilliant ippon with 2:36 remaining on the clock to claim victory. In the round of 32, Simin faced Kyrgyzstan's Daut Paltushev (ranked 146th). After both athletes picked up penalties for passivity, the Israeli took a waza-ari lead and ultimately threw his opponent for an ippon with 1:44 left in the match.

Tough Defeat Against Catharina

In the round of 16, Simin met a formidable opponent in 28-year-old Catharina, a multiple World Championship medalist and reigning European silver medalist. Simin showed a strong offensive mindset early on, forcing the Dutchman into a passivity penalty. However, with just 40 seconds remaining, Catharina scored a waza-ari to take the lead and secure the win.

Looking ahead, Israel's Raz Hershko will compete in the women's over-78 kg category on Saturday. Meanwhile, the tournament boasts a total prize pool of 798,000 euros for individual categories and 200,000 euros for the team event.
