New York Attorney General Letitia James has been appointed as the special prosecutor in a high-profile gang rape case involving a prestigious university, as announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul following a loss of confidence in the local district attorney's office. The case, which has shocked the United States, stems from an alleged 2024 incident where seven students are accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a 20-year-old student at a fraternity house.

The Reopened Investigation and Allegations

The investigation was reopened following a civil lawsuit filed by the victim, detailing the events of that night across 101 pages. According to the plaintiff, she met one of the defendants at a bar, where she was allegedly pressured into consuming ketamine, rum, and marijuana-infused substances after refusing his advances multiple times. The lawsuit further details that several students joined the assault throughout the night, ending near six in the morning when the victim lost consciousness.

The young woman at the center of this case deserves to know that every fact will be examined and justice will be served, stated New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Evidence and University Response

CNN reported that investigators recovered disturbing messages from a Snapchat group chat used by the suspects during the incident. While the university initially suspended the students following the victim's report to campus police and ethics officials, disciplinary measures were later reduced to writing assignments, prompting widespread outrage and federal scrutiny.
