WhatsApp Launches New Parental Control Tools and Privacy Settings for Teens
WhatsApp has launched new parental control tools for teenagers, offering optional settings for privacy, group management, and Meta AI while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
WhatsApp announced the launch of new parental control tools designed for teenagers, featuring a suite of optional settings that allow parents and teens to collaboratively configure their in-app experience while strictly preserving message and chat privacy.
Under the new tools, parents can establish privacy parameters for teenagers, including restrictions on who can view their profile picture and who can add them to group chats. If a teenager attempts to modify these settings to a more permissive level, parent authorization via a pre-configured PIN code is strictly required.
Additionally, parents will receive notifications when their teenager joins or leaves a group, or when a group they belong to significantly increases its member count. Parents can also regulate how teens interact with Channels, which status updates they can view, and who can access their own status updates.
The new controls also empower parents to select the appropriate Meta AI experience for teenagers, choosing between the standard default setting for users aged 13 and older or a stricter "Limited Content" option that restricts available material.
While parental controls are entirely optional and can be adjusted or disabled at any time using a single PIN code, user privacy remains uncompromised. Even with parental controls active, parents have zero access to the content of messages or private calls, as end-to-end encryption ensures absolute confidentiality.
