Emil Vinshel, who is leading the acquisition of a controlling stake in Altshuler Shaham Finance, is known for his relentless drive. At 54, the son of immigrants who initially dreamed of becoming a doctor recently signed a major acquisition agreement. Through weSure Global Tech and Yair Levenstein, the CEO of Altshuler Shaham Finance, the partners will jointly acquire about 55% of the public company's shares for 1 billion shekels, subject to regulatory approvals.

Vinshel is convinced this is the opportunity to position his group among Israel's largest in insurance and finance. In his first interview following the agreement, Vinshel spoke with Calcalist's weekend magazine about the behind-the-scenes drama, viewing the recent drop in yields and capital outflows from the investment house as a strategic opportunity.

A Calculated Risk and a Fresh Reset

Addressing the challenges Altshuler Shaham faced in recent years, Vinshel noted that rapid growth combined with a lack of flexibility and certain investment exposures created heavy headwinds. However, he emphasized that a comprehensive reset will put the firm back on track. Vinshel highlighted that the partnership with weSure and Ayalon Insurance will create strong synergies, enabling the group to offer comprehensive financial and insurance solutions to its clients.

"We didn't buy a cat in a bag. I assumed we were buying a good company from decent people, and that it simply needed a reset and a change in ownership," Vinshel stated.

Moving Forward and Long-Term Vision

The agreement dictates that the Altshuler Shaham brand name will change within 18 months, marking a new chapter for the investment house. Vinshel remains unfazed by the skepticism surrounding the deal, pointing to his successful turnaround of Ayalon Insurance as proof of his team's execution capabilities. With strong underlying assets, including a robust provident and pension portfolio, the leadership aims to restore investor confidence and secure a leading position in the Israeli financial market.
