Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, narrowly avoided a fall on Monday while descending the steps of the presidential helicopter with their nine-week-old baby boy. Secret Service agents watched anxiously as Usha, carrying infant Alek and a heavy diaper bag, slipped on the lower steps but managed to break her fall by grabbing the railing. Moments later, Vice President JD Vance joined her carrying their four-year-old daughter Mirabel, as the family departed for a high-stakes political trip to Alaska.

The incident occurred as the Vance family prepared to board Air Force Two for a seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Alaska. Usha Vance, attempting to navigate the stairs with her baby strapped to her chest and a heavy bag on her shoulder, momentarily lost her balance near the bottom. Thanks to quick reflexes, she secured the handrail and regained her footing, smiling briefly at press cameras before continuing.

Journey to Alaska and Campaign Pressures

Upon arriving on the tarmac, Vice President JD Vance lightened the mood with reporters, joking about the logistical challenges of traveling with a newborn.

"As you can probably see, Usha and some of the kids are joining. This is Usha's 50th state, and that's why we're bringing a nine-week-old baby on a seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Alaska," Vance said. "So if I give a speech tonight and look exhausted and stressed, that is precisely why."

Alek's birth on July 19 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, marked a historic milestone as the first child born to a sitting vice president since 1870.

Political Stakes in Alaska

The visit to Alaska is part of an aggressive campaign tour by President Donald Trump and his vice president ahead of upcoming midterms. The Vice President is scheduled to headline a major rally in Fairbanks in support of incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan.

Sullivan faces a fiercely contested Senate race against Democratic challenger and former Representative Mary Peltola, with recent RealClearPolitics polls showing Peltola holding a narrow 1.8-point lead. Despite the logistical hurdles of traveling with a newborn, the entire Vance family has deployed to bolster the campaign trail.
