According to the US State Department, the penalized entities provided critical support to Iran's aviation sector, which Washington argues is utilized by Tehran to facilitate weapons proliferation and terrorist activities.
Targeting Global Aviation Networks
Under the new directives, the US Department of the Treasury has placed sanctions on all remaining active Iranian airline companies, alongside foreign firms operating outside Iran that provided cargo, sales services, and aircraft procurement for the blacklisted carrier Mahan Air. "We will not relent in our efforts to sever the financial lifelines of the Iranian regime, including its aviation sector," the State Department stated in an official release.
Washington emphasized that the current initiative specifically focuses on external entities assisting Iran's aviation infrastructure beyond its borders. US officials contend that these support networks enable Tehran to sustain operational flight capabilities that serve military objectives and support regional militant proxies.
Historical Context and Enforcement
Mahan Air has previously been the target of extensive US punitive measures. Linked directly to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the airline has faced longstanding restrictions over its involvement in transferring weaponry to Syria. Previous shipments operated by the airline had reportedly been subjected to military interdiction.
In May 2015, the United States similarly penalized foreign companies operating in Iraq and the UAE after the Treasury Department determined they facilitated the acquisition of civil aircraft for Mahan Air. These actions form part of a broader, continuous strategy to dismantle Iran's illicit procurement and financing apparatus, including previous measures against shadow banking networks and petroleum trade.
