The United States Department of Justice announced on Tuesday that it has filed a civil forfeiture complaint seeking more than $61 million in cryptocurrency, primarily USDT, from accounts on the Binance exchange. According to the allegations, the funds were generated from black-market sales of Iranian oil and laundered through a sophisticated network totaling approximately $1.5 billion.

Chinese Companies and Terror Financing

According to the complaint, two Chinese-registered companies, Hexa Whale Trading and Blessed Trust, operated trading accounts on Binance and allegedly served as a conduit for transferring funds derived from oil sales directly to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The funds were reportedly intended to finance military and terror-related activities.

It is important to note that Binance itself is not accused of wrongdoing in the case. The company stated that it cooperated fully with US authorities and that the accounts of the involved entities were blocked and closed on the platform prior to the public announcement of the case.

Blockchain Analytics and Seizures

This move aligns with broader US efforts to increase economic pressure on Iran and prevent the transfer of funds to entities linked to the regime and the IRGC. Under an initiative referred to as "Operation Economic Fury," US authorities have reportedly frozen and seized cumulative Iranian crypto assets amounting to roughly $1 billion across various networks.

"Through blockchain analytics, investigators were able to trace the flow of funds and identify connections between accounts and involved parties, turning an attempted concealment tool into a roadmap for authorities."

This case highlights one of the central paradoxes of the crypto world: while digital assets allow rapid cross-border transfers and multi-layered wallet obfuscation, public blockchain transactions leave a permanent, traceable footprint that enables law enforcement to uncover illicit financial networks.
