The administration of US President Donald Trump has yet to approve the transfer of interceptor missiles to Ukraine, which are urgently needed to defend the country against ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks, according to a report published Monday in The Washington Post. The delay in approving the shipments coincides with a deepening rift between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, amid recent public criticisms from Washington.

At least some of the transfers of Patriot interceptor missiles originate from allied nations, requiring the approval of US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to proceed. The details were provided by a US official and three other individuals familiar with the matter who spoke to The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity. The United States maintains control over the process because the weaponry is American-made and transferred abroad under agreements requiring prior US authorization.

A Ukrainian official told The Washington Post that only a few interceptors remain in Ukraine's dwindling stockpiles. Officials noted that while Hegseth has not formally rejected the transfer requests, he has also failed to complete the necessary administrative steps to authorize them, even as he continues to approve other forms of US assistance to Kyiv. The diplomatic friction comes as Trump and Zelensky clash publicly, with Ukrainian officials warning that the delays directly cost civilian lives by crippling air defense capabilities.

According to the report, Trump has increasingly singled out Zelensky over frustrations related to energy prices—exacerbated by Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries—and the president's political standing ahead of upcoming midterms. Zelensky stated that Ukraine could halt its attacks on Russian refineries in exchange for US supplies of Patriot missiles for a corresponding period. Meanwhile, a one-year-old toddler sitting in a stroller was killed in a Russian drone strike at a public park in the Kharkiv region, part of a devastating surge in civilian casualties across Ukraine documented by the United Nations.
