The incident occurred on Friday, the eve of Sukkot, carrying 276 passengers and nine crew members. Following the medical event, the aircraft was redirected to Athens International Airport, where it landed safely.
After landing, the United crew decided not to continue the flight to Newark, and the journey was canceled. The airline arranged a replacement flight to transport passengers from Athens to Newark over Saturday.
United Airlines stated to PassportNews: "United Flight 85 from Tel Aviv to Newark landed safely in Athens on Friday to attend to a crew member's medical emergency. The flight was subsequently canceled, and we arranged an alternative flight to fly our passengers to Newark on Saturday."
