Cryptocurrency continues to deepen its hold on the world of sports. In recent years, companies in the field have signed a series of sponsorship agreements with leagues, teams, and international tournaments, and now the University of Kansas joins the list with a new agreement with the digital finance company Ripple.
As part of the agreement, the sponsorship tag of XRP, Ripple's cryptocurrency, will appear on the uniforms of all the university's sports teams. Although the parties did not disclose the scope of the deal, it was reported in the United States that its value is estimated at approximately 30 million dollars, which may make it the largest uniform sponsorship deal in the history of college sports.
University of Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff explained that the collaboration is much broader than traditional sponsorship:
'We were looking for something that would encompass all of our programs, beyond just a symbol on a shirt. It is one thing to put a logo on a uniform, and this is a completely different kind of opportunity to bring to life the story of what this company represents and what it does in the market.'
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse also addressed the agreement:
'We are at a stage where a groundbreaking industry like crypto and blockchain meets a period of reshaping in college sports. This is an opportunity to create joint innovation and try new things together.'
Beyond the appearance of the XRP logo on the uniforms, the agreement also includes branding at the university's sports facilities, on digital assets, and on advertising billboards during events. In addition, according to the official announcement, Ripple will fund financial and technological education programs for Kansas student-athletes and will work to integrate university graduates into internship programs and jobs in the high-tech industry.
This move joins a series of prominent collaborations between crypto companies and the world of sports, including Crypto.com's sponsorships of the Champions League and the acquisition of the naming rights for the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, alongside other agreements with national teams and sports organizations around the world.
