According to a report by the ABC network, General Charles Costanza, commander of the US Army's V Corps, was transferred from his position in recent days. The circumstances of the dismissal remain shrouded in mystery, and the Army refused to provide detailed official explanations for the sudden move.
Costanza's dismissal occurs against the backdrop of an unprecedented, widespread upheaval in the senior command ranks of the United States Army. Under Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, more than two dozen senior officers have already been dismissed or moved from their positions, usually without any public explanation. However, a source familiar with the details of Costanza's specific dismissal noted that the move is not related to the Secretary of Defense's broad efforts to reshape the top of the Army, and that it has no direct political implications.
The drama in the top military command is taking place while the Pentagon is dealing with a severe escalation in the Middle East. The United States and Iran have recently intensified mutual attacks, with American forces launching a series of 11 days of airstrikes against Iranian military targets. Secretary of Defense Hegseth noted that the cost of the war has already reached 37.5 billion dollars, and demanded an additional 67 billion dollars from Congress to fund the fighting. At the same time, a bill by Senator Tammy Duckworth seeks to address the Pentagon's confusing casualty reports in this war.
In the European arena, the V Corps, which Costanza, an armor officer by training, has commanded since April 2024, is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of United States Army forces on the continent. The corps, which is partially based in Poland, has taken a prominent role since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The person scheduled to replace Costanza is General Thomas Plath, whose appointment has already been confirmed in the Senate. Until he takes office, General John B. Mountford is serving as acting commander.
The dismissal also comes against the backdrop of tension surrounding the reduction of the American presence in Europe this year, particularly after the sudden cancellation of the deployment of an armored brigade from Texas on Polish soil. This cancellation sparked sharp criticism in Warsaw and forced President Donald Trump to announce later that the United States would deploy 5,000 soldiers in Poland after all, in order to reassure the important NATO ally.
