Mother who killed her three children claims postpartum psychosis defense

Lindsay Clancy, a 35-year-old nurse from Massachusetts, is on trial for the murder of her children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. Clancy pleads not guilty, though she does not deny causing their deaths. Her defense team argues that at the time of the incident, she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was therefore not responsible for her actions.

The tragedy occurred in January 2023. That afternoon, her husband, Patrick Clancy, left the house to pick up dinner and medicine. Upon his return, he found his wife lying outside beneath their bedroom window; she had jumped after cutting her wrists and throat.

During the trial, the jury heard a recording of Patrick’s emergency call. In the audio, he is heard repeatedly asking about her condition and searching for the children. When Lindsay mumbled that the children were in the basement, he rushed down to find them unresponsive. Paramedics later pronounced them dead at the scene.

As a result of the suicide attempt, Clancy remains paralyzed from the waist down due to severe spinal injuries. Her lawyers noted that she had long struggled with depression and had voluntarily checked into a psychiatric facility less than a month before the incident. The defense claims that recent adjustments to her medication regimen exacerbated her mental state.

Patrick Clancy testified that his wife was a devoted mother who had been suffering from insomnia, anxiety, and obsessive thoughts. He also revealed that after the incident, she told him she had heard a voice urging her to act immediately. Conversely, the prosecution maintains that the act was calculated and that Clancy was fully aware of her actions.

The trial is ongoing. In the coming weeks, psychiatric experts are expected to testify, which will be central to the jury’s determination of whether Clancy was in a state of psychosis or acted with full awareness.
